Lando Norris narrowly beat fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the quickest lap in the final moments of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the championship lead from his teammate by one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, beat the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Before then, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair during the running before sprint qualifying set to begin at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in realistic title contention, trailing 36 points behind behind Norris, ended up in 17th place as his Red Bull team followed a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he rotated at Turn Four during the early running. Tsunoda spun out over the curbs on exit before rotating through the escape zone, and was blessed to avoid just a slight brush of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the high-speed corner approaching the last turn on to the pit straight. The veteran wrapped up in 19th, trailing team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the other competitors, with the German's car third fastest, 0.619secs behind Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
